Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Humantay Lake – Salkantaypampa

We begin our adventure by picking you up from your hotel at 5:00 AM. Afterward, we will drive for approximately 4 hours to reach Anta-Mollepata. Along the way, you will witness the awe-inspiring views of the Salkantay and Veronica mountains. Furthermore, the changing landscapes, from highlands to lush valleys, will captivate you at every turn.

Once we arrive, we will stop for a delicious breakfast in Soraypampa. Then, we will meet our team, organize the mules, and get ready for our first hike. By 9:30 AM, we will begin the trek towards Humantay Lake (4,200 m.a.s.l), a 3-hour round trip. Upon reaching the lake, you will be greeted by the sight of the Humantay glacier, and the lake’s stunning turquoise waters will leave you speechless. We will take about an hour to enjoy the views before returning to Soraypampa for a well-deserved lunch.

Later on, we will continue our hike towards Salkantaypampa, where we will camp for the night. This campsite, at the foot of glaciers, offers spectacular views of the mountains and is an ideal spot to relax and watch the sunset. Therefore, the night skies will be filled with stars, giving you a sense of peace and tranquility only found in the heart of the Andes.

ADDITIONAL INFO

GENERAL TIPS & ESSENTIAL INFO

  • If you plan to hike the Salkantay trek during peak season (May to August), booking at least two months in advance is highly recommended.
  • Bottled water is available for purchase throughout the trek, but be aware that prices increase the further along the route you go.
  • This trek is not suitable for individuals with back problems due to the physical demands of the hike.
  • We do not operate the Salkantay trek in January or February because of heavy rainfall, landslides, and dangerous trail conditions, especially from the second day onward.

PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

  • Break in your trekking shoes before starting the hike to prevent discomfort and blisters.
  • Spend at least two days in Cusco before your trek to help your body acclimate to the altitude.
  • Keep your toenails trimmed short to avoid painful pressure inside your boots, especially during the descent.
  • Store your clothes inside your sleeping bag overnight to keep them warm for the next morning.
  • Always be prepared for rain, even in the dry season, as unexpected showers can make the trek uncomfortable if you don’t have waterproof gear.
  • Pack a pair of sandals or comfortable shoes to wear at the campsites after a long day of hiking.

LUGGAGE & DUFFEL BAG

  • We provide duffel bags at our office after the briefing. These will be carried by horses and will only be accessible at the campsites.
  • Your duffel must not exceed 7kg in total weight: 4kg for personal belongings and 3kg for your sleeping bag and sleeping pad.
  • Keep essentials like water, snacks, a rain jacket, and a first aid kit in your daypack.

UNEXPECTED STRIKES & ROADBLOCKS

  • Strikes and road disruptions in Peru can affect the trek and the return from Machu Picchu. If a strike occurs:
    • On Day 1, we may transport you to the trailhead the evening before your departure.
    • On the final day, if the train service is impacted, we will arrange for you to hike an additional two hours from Aguas Calientes to Hidroelectrica, where our van will pick you up and take you back to Cusco.

RETURN JOURNEY FROM MACHU PICCHU TO CUSCO

  • You will first take a 30-minute bus ride from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes.
  • Your guide will provide train tickets for your journey back:
    • Aguas Calientes → Ollantaytambo: Approx. 1.5 hours by train.
    • Aguas Calientes → Poroy: Approx. 3.5 hours by train.
  • Upon arrival, a driver from AB Expeditions will be waiting to transfer you to Cusco.
    • Ollantaytambo → Cusco: Approx. 1.5 hours by car.
    • Poroy → Cusco: Approx. 40 minutes by car.

WEATHER CONDITIONS ALONG THE TRAIL

  • Due to its high-altitude location in the Andes, Salkantay’s weather is highly unpredictable.
  • Rainy Season (Nov–Mar): Expect cold and wet conditions at night, with temperatures around 15°C (60°F) during the day and 5°C (40°F) at night.
  • Dry Season (Apr–Oct): Clear skies, warmer days (20°C / 70°F), but nights can drop to -7°C (19°F).
  • By Day 3, as we descend into the rainforest, temperatures will rise, and the climate will become more humid.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

  • We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to cover unexpected cancellations, medical emergencies, and non-refundable Machu Picchu permits.
