ADDITIONAL INFO

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Booking in Advance:
During the high season (May to August), it is recommended to book your 5-day Salkantay trek at least two months in advance to ensure availability.

Water Availability:
Bottled water can be purchased throughout the trek, but keep in mind that prices increase as you move further along the route.

Health Considerations:
This 5-day trek is not suitable for individuals with back problems.

Seasonal Restrictions:
We do not operate the 5-day Salkantay trek in January and February due to the risk of landslides. Starting from the second afternoon of the trek, you will be hiking along the hillside, where landslides are common and can obstruct the path. Additionally, the trail becomes extremely muddy, slippery, and hazardous during this period.

TREKKING TIPS

  • Ensure your hiking boots are well broken in before starting the 5-day Salkantay trek.
  • Spend at least two days in Cusco prior to the trek to acclimate to the altitude.
  • Trim your toenails short before the hike to avoid discomfort or injuries during steep descents.
  • Keep your clothes inside your sleeping bag at night. This will help you put on warm clothes in the morning if temperatures drop.
  • Always be prepared for rain, even in the dry season. Getting wet without the chance to dry off can make the trek uncomfortable.
  • Bring a pair of sandals or comfortable shoes to wear after a long day of trekking.

DUFFEL BAG GUIDELINES

We will provide you with a duffel bag at our office after your briefing. These bags will be carried by pack horses and will only be accessible at the campsites. Pack only the essentials for hiking in your daypack, such as water, snacks, a first aid kit, and rain gear.

Weight limit:

  • The duffel bag should not exceed 7 kg.
  • 4 kg for your personal belongings.
  • 3 kg for your sleeping bag and sleeping pad.

STRIKES AND ROADBLOCKS

Strikes and roadblocks are common in Peru and may impact the 5-day Salkantay trek and train services to and from Machu Picchu. We will make every effort to ensure your trek proceeds with the necessary adjustments.

  • If a strike occurs on the first day of your trek, we will arrange for transportation to the trailhead the night before your departure.
  • If a strike occurs on your return day, we will send our vans to Hidroeléctrica, requiring you to walk an additional two hours from Aguas Calientes to the pickup point before being driven back to Cusco.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

The Salkantay trek passes through the Andes, making the weather unpredictable. Be prepared for a mix of warm, cold, dry, and wet conditions.

  • Rainy Season (November–March): Expect rain and wind, especially at the Salkantay Pass and campsites. Daytime temperatures are around 15°C (60°F), dropping to 5°C (40°F) at night. It can get significantly colder when raining.

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance, which can protect you in case of unexpected cancellations. This insurance may cover non-refundable costs, such as your Machu Picchu permit, and medical expenses if you experience illness or injury during your trip.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This trek is considered challenging due to altitude variations and rugged terrain. We recommend being in good physical condition before attempting the Salkantay trek.

If you are renewing your passport, send us a digital copy of your current passport to secure your trek permits. If you no longer have your old passport, any government-issued ID with the same name will be accepted. Once your new passport is issued, please email us a copy as soon as possible to update your permit information
